This month, APM's Principal Pilates Instructor, Rachel Lotspeich shares her Pilates Journey. Rachel works at APM, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
Tell us your name and a little about yourself.
I was born in Melbourne and moved to New York in 1995 to study. I moved to Los Angeles in 2000 and did my teacher training in the Classical Method of Pilates. I assisted on the same training program for 10 years from 2005 and opened my own Pilates studio in 2009. I moved back to Melbourne with my family in 2016 after 21 years overseas. It was to be closer to my family and have my daughter grow up in our laid back Aussie culture. I still oversee my studio from here and teach here at APM 3 days a week.
When did you start your Pilates journey?
A friend of mine was doing her teacher training in 1998 and I took a couple of mat sessions with her. I couldn’t afford to do Pilates at that point but once I moved to LA, I was able to start my own career in the Pilates Technique Certification.
How did you find APM?
I was looking for a place to keep up my own practice, as I always work ‘harder’ in a class with someone to kick my butt.
What is the reason you keep doing Pilates?
I have seen the major shifts Pilates has made in 100’s of my clients' lives and that has been the motivating factor to my career. I also love to ‘teach teachers’. For myself, I need to work on my flexibility and stay injury free.
Anything you find particularly challenging?
Well, the more advanced exercises for sure. My weak area is my hips and trying to make sure that they don’t get too tight.
Do you have goals to reach in your Pilates journey?
I am happy with my journey at this point :)
Do you have a favourite Pilates exercise or sequence?
I love hanging on the Cadillac and the side leg mat series.
